The Joseph Berthold / Hopkins P.T.C. Scholarship
Joseph Berthold began as a teacher in Mentor Schools in September 1952. From 1971-1981 he served, as principal at Brentmoor Elementary and in September 1981 became principal at Hopkins. He remained at Hopkins until his retirement. Mr. Berthold was extremely dedicated to his staff and the children at Hopkins. He was a soft spoken, kind and gentle man who was easy to approach with any problem or concern. He always found time for everyone's needs - student, teacher and parent alike.
Mr. Berthold went out of his way to help students, always found time to spend with parents regarding their concerns and was a tremendous help and encouragement to staff. He could frequently be found in the lunchroom--talking to the kids, joking around, disciplining and even wiping off tables. He kept a stool in the office where he would sit, ready to converse with staff, share stories and even snacks. He was a principal with a ready smile and wonderful sense of humor and had a way of making everyone feel valued. He passed away from cancer a few short years after he retired. This scholarship was begun in his memory.
In Mr. Berthold's memory two scholarships are awarded each year, one each to a female and male student. Each scholarship is in the amount of $500. The scholarship is to be used for educational training beyond high school in any college or technical school. It is open to any student who attended Hopkins Elementary, including all of his/her 6th grade year. Specific requirements are contained in the application.
The Center Street Elementary School Scholarship
The Center Street Elementary School Scholarship is awarded each year to two students who graduated from Center Street Elementary. Each scholarship is in the amount of $500. The Scholarship is currently funded through the Class of 2010. Specific requirements for the scholarship are contained in the application.
